Anything for the story… Even riding a bike

Getting on a bike isn’t exactly doing ANYTHING for a story.

It’s not hard to strap on a helmet and peddle, but it wasn’t a way of story telling I first considered when I was assigned to do a reaction story about Lance Armstrong.

Armstrong was in the news Monday after an international body stripped him of his Tour de France titles.

My initial thoughts was just to interview a competitive cyclist. But then the suggestion came from our noon editorial meeting, to do some interviews on a bike, and while riding.

Yep, I was bit intimidated. And I questioned how could this work realistically. But we gave it a try.

We strapped a GoPro to my bike and Jacob, the camera-op, followed close by in a car.

It offered a different perspective for a story that could of just been a bunch of boring streeters at a bike shop.

New demo tape… with some Motion 5 help

Got a little carried a way with my demo tape. Decided to add an instrumental track and some kinetic typography.

I used my normal editing software Final Cut Pro X. But to make all the fancy graphics I purchased Motion 5. It took me a whole weekend to learn. But there’re lots of tutorials online, including this one.

Motion 5 work area.

I’m really happy with it. We’ll see what effect it actually has when all those news directors start calling.

Heights by great men reached and kept were not obtained by sudden flight, but while their companions slept, they were toiling upward in the night.
