Mexican mini documentary

Did I tell you I was in Mexico this summer?

Yes, for nine days.

Cancun? Acapulco?

No, Cuernavaca. Or as the local say Uernavaca

In May, I and six other students from Canadian universities went to Mexico for a cultural immersion experience. But I didn’t just go to learn. I went to Mexico to produce a mini-documentary. Right now the piece is in post-production. I will post some footage and pictures in a timming (Trini-talk for: I will post content soon).

In the meantime, I wrote about my trip for the Ryerson Catholic Chaplaincy Centre. The centre sponsored a huge portion of my trip. An excerpt and link is below.

“Two families invited us into their homes. If I didn’t have my camera and tripod I’d feel like someone who was invading their home. But with my equipment slung across my back like a sword I felt like an exploiter who just wanted to get as many shots as I could from this poor woman to enrich my documentary.” READ MORE

Memories of creamy crack

I can remember my sister sitting between my mother’s legs at the bottom of our couch. A towel draped around her neck. And my mother, snapping on surgical gloves that she would bring home from the hospital she worked at. Just for Me, Dream Kids, Dark and Lovely, Motions, Cream of Nature, Soft and Beautiful– these magical products whipped my sister’s hair into silk threads.

My friend, Dominique Bennett, posted a quick video today of her mother perming her hair.

It made me relive the pain my sister would bear. And it made me remember the one time my mother asked, “You want me to do this to yours?”

Morning news revival- Amen & Halleluia

A year ago, maybe two, we were all lost like sheep without a shepherd. The future of local news seemed grim. Some stations looked set to close. And the job prospects for TV reporters seemed few. Back in 2009 I did a a blog touching on this gloom and doom in local news.

Suddenly this dark cloud has passed. The tempest has calmed. And local news is rising like the morning sun. As true as these are all clichés, more and more TV stations are adding morning shows. Yep. Global News Toronto is starting a morning show. CHCH Hamiliton’s morning show will start earlier at 4 am.

I was in Halifax, N.S. for the RTDNA- Association of Electronic Journalists national conference. I attended a session that discussed how local news is waking up to morning news. I wrote a short piece for Jsource.ca. Check it out.

“It wasn’t a matter of why should we, but why shouldn’t we [a weekend morning show],” added CP24 senior producer Linda Weber, “We’re on air Saturday any way. Why not?”
